Double Crochet Needles

Double crochet needles

Have you ever sat by a fire, wrapped in an afghan or blanket, and marveled at its softness and warmth? Has some of that wonder stemmed from the fact that it was crocheted, by hand, by your mom, grandmother or other person of talent? With a hook and some yarn, women (and some men!) from the 1800's until today have produced beautiful blankets, tablecloths, doilies and more, through the art of crochet.

Unlike many crafts, crochet requires a very small investment in supplies. The tool needed is called a crochet hook. The basic crochet hook is available in many materials - steel, plastic, varying types of wood (such as bamboo or walnut) and more - and it has a hook on one end. Alternately, the crafter may also acquire double crochet needles... but what is the difference?

In the double crochet needle family, there are double-ended and double-hook needles. Double-ended hooks have different sized hooks on each end. These are great for storing or traveling because they reduce the number of hooks that must be purchased or carried. Each end would be used independently, like the basic hook. Double-hook needles have the same sized hook on each end.

The double-hook needle can be used in the craft of "crochet on the double." This technique, using two or more colors of yarn, creates a fabric (such as that afghan!) and the two sides are equally decorative. If you are fortunate enough to receive handmade crocheted items, treasure them for both their beauty and their practicality. Even better, ask that talented person to teach you to crochet and perpetuate the art!
